Recommendations

The first thing to sort out is what sort of Telephone service do you have.

Cable from Virgin

In this case you are stuck with Virgin supplying your broadband unless you wish to change to an analogue supplier such as BT.

Analogue

If your Telephone is supplied by anyone else than Virgin you will have an analogue connection and this means you can have an ADSL connection. The Broadband ISP does NOT have to be the same as your Telephone provider.
There are a lot of Broadband ISP's with many different packages. Our preferred supplier is PLUSNET. If you go to their site and login as a guest you can see the information available. You can see up to within the last two hours your amount of download. Faults when reported are listed as questions etc and can be tracked from any internet connection. Their technical help is second to none in ability, open honesty and communication.

Cheapest

This is nearly impossible to decide on due to very vast amount of packages offered. The cheapest is pay as you go in that you get reduce your monthly cost but then the connection cost increases, while some that seem to offer great prices per month are let down by their lack of customer support and more importantly their internal infrastructure. To understand the last point think about a little village with a narrow windy lane to the next town. Now it is slow to get to the town until somebody builds a three lane motorway to it from your village. Now you get to the town very quickly but are still stuck in traffic in the town. The congestion in the town is similar to congestion you get at ISP's who have limited infrastructure for their size. Keeping this down keeps their costs down.
