The most likely problem is that your keyboard is set to American or some other language and needs to be English
The quick answer is to use the LEFT ALT key + the shift key and this should toggle It to English.
Longer way is to go to START, CONTROL PANEL, REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE SETTINGS click the Languages tab, and then the Details box.
Now the fun bit.

Set the first box to English UK.
Next scroll the middle box to the setting that says English US and click on it once. Now click the remove button. Now click the apply button. If it complains that it wil not go until a reboot don’t worry.
Click ok to clear the box and then apply in the one behind followed by OK. If required reboot.
Now check the keys.
The £ sign should be the shifted 3
The $ sign should be the shifted 4
The “ sign should be the shifted 2
The # will be next to the Enterr key
The @ will be beside that.
