Planning will identify all the tasks to be undertaken and if you apply duration and link each item to a predecessor a Gantt chart is produced. If you then track progress against it you will see any slippage as it occurs not when it becomes too late.

You will need to keep particular control over the critical path tasks. The critical path is the shortest time path from start to finish. Any slip on this path will slip the whole project.
